How the Fees Have Changed
In 2020 the state raised the fees from $1 per walk-in and $5 per vehicle to today's $5 per person and $10 per vehicle. Reservations for non-residents followed on May 12, 2022. See reservations.
Visitor Center Hours
The Diamond Head Visitor Center inside the crater, run with Pacific Historic Parks, keeps its own hours: 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, closed December 25 and January 1. See visitor center.
Best Time of Day
The agency built the reservation system to move hikers away from the crowded morning hours and into the quieter afternoon. Mornings are the busiest time. Afternoons are hotter, so carry more water. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the hike so you finish well before the 6 p.m. close.
Closures
The park can close for storms or emergencies. Check the Hawaii State Parks park notices before you go. When state parks closed for storms in 2026, the agency refunded reservations for closed days automatically.
