Diamond Head Sunrise Hike

A sunrise hike at Diamond Head is limited by the park's hours: the tunnel gate opens at 6 a.m., and the first reservation slot starts at 6 a.m. Whether you reach the summit before the sun comes up depends on the time of year, since the climb is 0.8 mile and 560 feet. On days when sunrise is well after 6 a.m., the first slot gives you the best chance. Nobody may enter before 6 a.m.

What the Rules Allow

The agency does not publish sunrise times, and this guide does not estimate them. Check a sunrise table for Honolulu on your date: when sunrise falls comfortably later than the time it takes you to drive or walk in and climb, a summit sunrise is possible.

Plan the Climb

The agency's figures for the hike: 0.8 mile one way, 560 feet of climbing, steep stairs and a lighted tunnel. Most hikers take 60 to 90 minutes round trip, so the climb alone is often 30 to 45 minutes. Add the walk from the tunnel if you are dropped off.

Which Way to Look

The summit lookout faces the south shore. Toward the east, the state's brochure describes views along the coast to Koko Head and, on clear days, the islands of Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and Maui. That is the direction of the morning light. To the west, Waikīkī and the coast to Waiʻanae catch it.

Early-Morning Tips

If You Miss Sunrise

An early slot still gets you on the trail before the day's heat builds. For crowds, the agency's advice runs the other way: it built the reservation system to shift visitors from the crowded morning into the quieter afternoon. See hours.
