Diamond Head Tours

The official Diamond Head tour is a self-guided audio tour sold by Pacific Historic Parks, the park's visitor center partner, covering the crater's history, culture, geology, plants and wildlife as you hike. It does not include park entry: non-residents still book a $5 entry reservation, and parking if driving. Commercial shuttles and guided tours book park access for their passengers through the state's separate portal for licensed carriers.

The Official Audio Tour

Hawaii State Parks links to the Diamond Head audio tour from its park page. Pacific Historic Parks describes it as the official Diamond Head hiking audio tour: a self-guided narration of the history and cultural background of the trail as you climb. It focuses on history, culture, geography, plant and animal life and scenery.

Two things to know:

Shuttles and Guided Tours

Tour companies, shuttles and trolleys must be licensed carriers (regulated by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission) and book through the state's PUC reservation portal, not the public site. Their passengers need reservations too. The agency warns that a commercial carrier caught using the visitor system can be banned from the park for up to a year.

Commercial vehicle fees, paid by the operator:

When you compare tours, ask whether park entry is included and what time slot the operator has booked.

Volunteer Docents

The park runs a docent program for volunteers. Volunteers must generally be 18 or older (younger with parental permission and a signed liability form), meet in person with park staff, and commit to a program, most for 3 or 6 months. The volunteer page on the Hawaii State Parks site has the sign-up, which also covers arranging school field trips.

Do You Need a Tour?

Most visitors hike on their own: the trail is a single 0.8-mile route, and the trail map numbers every stop. A tour mostly helps with transport and with the story behind what you see. If transport is the issue, compare a tour with walking, bus or drop-off.
